What is Biological Age?
Biological age measures how healthy your body is.
It differs from your actual age, which counts how long you’ve been alive.
You might be 30, but if you don’t eat well or exercise, your biological age could be more like 40. On the other hand, if you take good care of yourself, your biological age might be 25.
What’s the History of Measuring Aging?
The idea of biological age has been around for a long time.
In the 1950s, scientist Denham Harman suggested aging was caused by the accumulation of “free radicals” in the body. These are unstable molecules that can damage cells.
This idea led to the development of antioxidant supplements aimed at reducing the effects of free radicals on the body.
In recent years, advances in genetics and medical technology led to more research in measuring biological age (like this paper).
Today, researchers have identified specific biomarkers, or indicators of aging, that measure through blood tests.
Why Calculate Biological Age?
Measuring biological age can be important for several reasons. First, it can give you a more accurate picture of your health and well-being. Knowing your biological age can also help you identify potential health risks and take steps to prevent or manage them.
For example, suppose your biological age is higher than your chronological age. It may be a sign you must make lifestyle change (better diet, more exercise, less stress) to slow aging.
The better you are at regular exercise, a healthy diet, and eight hours of sleep, the younger your biological age. Measuring biological age enables everyone to know the exact results of their efforts to achieve anti-aging.
How to Calculate Biological Age?
There are a few ways that scientists use to measure biological age. One way to measure biological age is through physical fitness tests, which can assess your strength, endurance, and flexibility. This can help determine how well your muscles, bones, and joints function.
Another way to measure biological age is through cognitive function tests, which evaluate memory, attention, and reasoning skills. This can help identify potential brain-related health risks and give an idea of your mental health.
Blood tests are the best way to measure biological age. Specific biomarkers in the blood can indicate how well your body is functioning and how quickly it may be aging. For example, elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels can indicate inflammation in the body, a red flag for age-related diseases such as heart disease.
Genetic testing is another way to measure biological age. By analyzing your DNA, scientists can identify genetic factors that may impact how quickly it may age.
Finally, imaging tests such as bone density scans, MRIs, and CT scans can provide information about the health of your organs and bones.
What Is This Biological Age Calculator?
My calculator is a tool developed by John G. Cramer, a researcher in the Department of Physics at the University of Washington. This biological age calculator calculates your biological age using simple blood tests most people typically perform during their annual physicals.
That’s right. You don’t need to pay or mail in your DNA samples. You also do not need to perform expensive, special testing. Just get the results from some of the most common blood tests out there, and assess your biological age using my calculator.
Remember:the calculator should not be used as a substitute for professional medical advice. And if your doctor isn’t performing these tests for you? Well, ask! My doctor did not perform the C-Reactive Protein test, but when I asked, she did and my insurance paid for it.
And what if I don’t have a doctor? Just go to any lab, such as Quest or LabCorp, and get tested yourself. They can be as cheap as a few dollars.
Which Blood Tests to Use?
Getting blood tests done is an integral part of staying healthy and monitoring any underlying health conditions.
Specifically, ask your doctor for a CBC with a Differential test. CBC stands for “complete blood count.” It measures the levels of different blood components in your body, such as red blood cells and platelets.
CBC with differential is a standard blood test your doctor may order to evaluate your overall health. High levels of white blood cells may indicate an infection or inflammation. Low levels may indicate a weakened immune system.
Another blood test you should get is called the Comprehensive Metabolic Panel. For example, high glucose levels may indicate diabetes, while elevated liver function markers may indicate liver disease.
Hemoglobin A1C, or HbA1c or just A1C, measures the average blood sugar levels over the past 2-3 months. This test is used to diagnose and monitor diabetes, a chronic condition that affects how your body processes glucose (sugar). This test benefits people with diabetes, providing a long-term picture of blood sugar control rather than just a snapshot.
H1AC and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) are individual tests you may need to ask your doctors to do. In any case, you can also get them directly via a lab.
How Do Biomarkers Measure Aging?
The inputs of the biological age calculator measure your body’s ability to function. Here’s what they are:
Albumin is a protein made in the liver and found in your blood. It helps to regulate the amount of fluid in your body. Doctors measure it to check how well your liver and kidneys work.
Creatinine is a waste product your muscles make when they use energy. Your kidneys filter creatinine out of your blood and excrete it in your urine. Doctors measure it to check how well your kidneys function.
Glucose is sugar used by your body for energy. Your body breaks carbohydrates in your food into glucose. Doctors measure it to check for diabetes, or too much sugar in your blood.
CRP: This stands for C-reactive protein, produced by your liver in response to inflammation. Doctors measure it to check for infections or inflammation.
Lymphocyte is a type of white blood cell and is part of your immune system. It attacks viruses and bacteria. Doctors measure it to check how well your immune system works.
Mean Cell Volume (MCV) measures the average size of your red blood cells. Doctors measure it to diagnose anemia, where you have a low red blood cell count or hemoglobin levels.
Red Cell Distribution Width measures the variation in size of your red blood cells. Doctors measure it to diagnose different types of anemia and other conditions that affect your red blood cells.
Alkaline Phosphatase is an enzyme found in your liver, bones, and other tissues. Doctors measure it to check for liver or bone problems.
White Blood Cells measure the number of white blood cells in your blood. Doctors measure it to see if your body is fighting an infection, inflammation or have a weakened immune system.
